Hi David
Thanks for your comment. I agree with you that afforestation programmes alone are not sufficient. Another thrust of the Green Frontier is eco-affluent convergence. Here we aim to promote sustainable energy use both in the Global North and the Global South. For example in the Global South the use of LED lights instead of Kerosene lamps or firewood. The use of solar ovens for cooking instead of firewood. Where firewood does need to be used for cooking foods that may not be suitable for solar ovens highly efficient rocket stoves, or biochar stoves that can utilise dry grass instead of firewood. Coupled to this we will promote water harvesting techniques and a whole range of permaculture techiques, especially the use of food forests. I'd like to hear more about your work in Chad when you have time. Best wishes, Craig.

while i like your site and support your general thrust, i find that re-forestation programs, are, in general, akin to bailing out a sinking boat with a teaspoon. when the activities of overgrazing, slash-and-burn agriculture, and cooking with wood consume more trees per day than can realistically be planted, the paradigm needs to shift. living and working in Chad, and watching, first hand, the swift desertification taking place, i am convinced that alternate methods of agriculture, cooking, and construction need to be put in place before focusing on re-forestation. further, all the alternative methods in ag, cooking, and construction need to be appropriate to the economy and culture. keep up the good work!
